If you’re a New Yorker who loves steak, then you sure have plenty of terrific steakhouses to pick from. The steakhouses in NYC are among the reasons why so many locals consider their city as the best city in the world.
You may have already tried out the iconic Peter Luger Steakhouse, which has been around since 1887. You can also try out the expensive stuff, such as the $110 12-ounce striploin Wagyu steak at Carne Mare, or the A5 Japanese Wagyu tenderloin at Cote for $39 per ounce.
Other places that you already might have visited (and subsequently frequented) may include St. Anselm, Hawksmoor NYC, and the Old Homestead Steakhouse.
But there’s no such thing as having too many steakhouse options, so let’s add more terrific steakhouses to the list:
Benjamin Steakhouse
Ask any knowledgeable steak fan in NYC for a list of the best steakhouses in the city, and Benjamin Steak is frequently included. This has 2 locations in Manhattan (40th street and 41st street), plus another one in White Plains. And they even have a branch in Japan.
You can start with their baked clams, along with the French onion soup with the muenster cheese. Then maybe you add the Caesar salad with the dressing of your choice. But make sure you have your appetite ready for the steak here, whether you’re getting the NY striploin, ribeye, or the filet mignon.
Strip House
You’ll find Strip House steakhouse at 13 East 12th Street, where they’re open every day at 4pm. But you might also find the Midtown location on 44th street if that’s more convenient for you.
There’s the undeniable French vibe to the restaurant, with luxuriously deep red colors prominent in the décor. And the vibes are great for the steaks, which are terrific enough even in a bad joint. You can go with the 14-ounce dry-aged New York Strip, the 14-ounce dry-aged ribeye, or the 20-ounce bone-in ribeye.
Enjoy your steak with the “Kung Pao” roasted cauliflower, with the scallions and crushed peanuts. The baked potato is another fine side dish to get, with some butter, bacon, cheddar, and sour cream.
Bowery Meat Company
This (Bowery Meat Company) is an intimate dining room that seats only 35 people at a time, so you might want to consider this place to host a private celebration, at some point. It’s on 9 East 1st Street, and it normally opens its doors at 5pm. But there’s a heated patio where you can just enjoy your meal.
Start the night with some broiled oysters, with pecorino Romano cheese, garlic, and herbed bread crumbs. Then for your sides, the crispy fingerling potatoes with truffle oil and cheese are great.
But which steak should you get? That’s up to you, but you can’t go wrong with the fantastic 6-ounce A5 Japanese Kuroge Wagyu Beef from the Kagoshima Prefecture. Yes, it’s expensive at $190, but you’re getting your money’s worth.
If a 6-ounce steak won’t sate your hunger, then you might go with the 28-ounce American Wagyu NY Strip from Snake River Farms. This features shishito peppers and roasted cipollini onions.
Sparks Steak House
This is another NYC institution (Spark Steak House), as it’s been serving steak fans since 1966. You can start off with the Mixed Vegetables Salad, featuring mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, and broccoli.
Then for your entrée, you can go with the filet mignon, the prime sirloin steak, the steak fromage topped with Roquefort cheese, or the Sliced Steak with Bordelaise sauce and fresh mushrooms.
Add the mashed potato or creamed spinach on the side, and just enjoy life. With steaks like these, life is good!
